Dental Implant FAQ for Patients in Ontario
Here’s what people want to know about this popular restorative procedure.

Dental Implants

Dental implants offered by our network of preferred provider dentists in Ontario can be an excellent restorative option for patients with one or several missing teeth.

If you’ve been considering restoring your smile with dental implants, here are the most frequently asked questions about the procedure to help give you an idea of what you can expect!

Question: What exactly is a dental implant?

Answer: A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root, typically in the form of a titanium screw. Implants are surgically placed into the jaw to merge with the bone over several months through a process called “osseointegration”, to then later support an artificial tooth or crown.

Question: Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Answer: Great question! If your gums and bone are in a relatively healthy state, then you’re most likely a candidate for dental implants. However, there are certain health conditions, such as diabetes, that may have an impact on the success of the procedure.

Our Network dentists would be happy to perform an evaluation to determine whether a restoration with dental implants is a suitable option for you.

Question: How painful is getting a dental implant?

Answer: Dental implant surgery should never be painful! The dentist or surgeon will first administer a topical anesthetic to the area, in conjunction with any necessary form of sedation to ensure a relaxing and comfortable procedure.

Question: How long after dental implants can I eat normally?

Answer: You should be able to eat about an hour after surgery. Please stick to eating softer foods during the first 24 hours following your procedure.

Question: Do dental implants feel unnatural?

Answer: Many patients agree that dental implants feel exactly like their natural teeth with chewing and other functions. However, since implants do not contain nerves like natural tooth roots do, patients will not feel sensations or sensitivities to hot or cold temperatures where the root once was.

Question: Is it difficult to look after dental implants?

Answer: Absolutely not! Dental implants require the same type of daily oral hygiene care that a natural smile does. This means brushing gently twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and routinely visiting your dentist and dental hygienist for a check-up and cleaning.

Question: How long do dental implants last?

Answer: With an up to 96% success rate, dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime with proper care! They are the most permanent method of dental restoration available to patients.

Most of our Teeth First Dental clinics offer dental implants among many other restorative dentistry services to help you achieve a fully functional and beautiful smile.
